It just isn’t fall without an apple crisp and this air fryer version is an absolute favorite. You might be surprised how many delicious desserts you can make in your air fryer.

An air fryer is basically a small convection oven which makes it the perfect appliance when you want something crispy like a crumb topping! See my list of the best air fryers under $100.

Now that apples are in season, they are great for making desserts. Most red varieties are high in natural sugars which means you don’t need as much added sugar.

In this recipe, I only add sugar to the topping and it’s still perfectly sweet. It tastes amazing on its own but even better with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream (use dairy-free ice cream for vegan diets)!

Air Fryer Apple Crisp Benefits

  • It’s the perfect fall dessert to use up all those sweet apples!
  • If you’re looking for a healthy air fryer apple crisp, this one uses significantly less sugar than others but it still tastes delicious and satisfying.
  • You don’t even have to turn on the oven. If you’re out of room or just don’t want to heat up the entire kitchen the air fryer is the go-to appliance.

Ingredients You’ll Need

ingredients for an apple crisp.
  • Apples – You will need about 2 1/2 cups of thinly sliced apples. This took about 4 large apples for me so if you’re apples are medium or small, I would use five. Use a red, sweeter variety like Gala, Fuji, or Honeycrisp. Granny smith are so tart they need sugar to be sweet enough for a crisp or pie.
  • Lemon – Lemon juice really brightens up the flavors of sweet ingredients like fruit. You may be surprised how much a little lemon juice does for a fruit dessert like this easy apple crisp.
  • Cinnamon – Cinnamon not only adds warmth and spice but it’s also great for you. It’s packed with antioxidants that fight inflammation. See my recipe for Lemon Cinnamon Water if you love this warming spice.
  • All-purpose flour – If you are on a gluten-free diet you can substitute equal parts gluten-free all-purpose flour in its place (I like Bob’s Red Mill 1-to1 Gluten-Free Baking Flour). Otherwise just use regular flour.
  • Sugar – This whole recipe only calls for 1/4 cup of sugar which means each serving only has one tablespoon of added sugar. That’s not bad for a dessert! You can use white sugar, brown sugar, or coconut sugar.
  • Cold butter or vegan butter – If you’re on a dairy-free or vegan diet, you can substitute vegan butter in it’s place. You can usually find it in the same area of the grocery store as regular butter.

Recipe Steps

cored and cut apples with topping.

Step One

Wash and dry your fresh apples. Core and thinly slice them then place the slices in a medium bowl. You should have around 2 1/2 cups of apple slices.

Please see the recipe card at the end of this post for the exact ingredients and measurements.

Step Two

Add the water, lemon juice, and cinnamon to the apples and then stir to combine.

Pour the apples into a 6 inch round baking dish (or one that will fit inside your individual air fryer basket). I recommend this air fryer baking dish that should fit most regular-sized models.

Step Three

In a medium bowl, combine the flour, sugar, sea salt, and softened butter then use your hands to combine the mixture. It should be crumbly.

Step Four

Spread the crisp topping evenly over the apple mixture.

Place the baking dish inside of the air fryer basket. Set the temperature to 325 degrees for 30 minutes cooking time. The apples should be soft and the top golden brown when the crisp is done.

Serve it hot or at room temperature. My husband has even been known to eat the leftovers cold the next day!

I hope your family loves this classic dessert made with simple ingredients. This Air Fryer Apple Crisp recipe is one of my favorites and tastes just like apple pie or apple crumble with a streusel topping.

Serve warm. Enjoy by itself or with ice cream!

Recipe Tips

  • If your air fryer basket is on the small side, you may need to use ramekins instead of the baking dish. If using ramekins, divide the apple and topping mixture between each bowl and bake according to the directions.
  • You can use green apples for this recipe, but you may need to add an extra tablespoon or two of sugar to make sure the final product is sweet enough.
  • You can use coconut sugar instead of white granulated sugar, if you prefer. Coconut sugar has a slightly lower glycemic index than white sugar.
  • You don’t have to peel the apples, but you can if you want to. You may also like this recipe for Apple Streusel Pie.
  • Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

You can top it with vanilla ice cream (regular or dairy-free), whipped cream, caramel sauce, or coco whip for vegan or dairy-free diets.
