If you love the combination of chocolate and peppermint, then you’ve got to try this easy 3-ingredient recipe for Homemade Peppermint Patties.
Whether you’re on a dairy-free, vegan, or paleo diet, you can enjoy these delicious treats.
You may be tempted to make them just for the holidays, but they are actually great for anytime of year. This no-bake dessert is one of my favorite indulgences.
Homemade 3-Ingredient Peppermint Patty Benefits
- Skip the questionable ingredients like corn syrup and stick with these real food, simple ingredients for this delicious treat.
- Use melted chocolate, peppermint flavor, and coconut butter for the best peppermint patties you’ve ever had!
- Kids can help make this easy recipe that is a great edible gift during the holiday season. It’s a wonderful holiday treat.
Ingredients
- Coconut butter (also called coconut manna) makes the filling of these homemade peppermint patties as opposed to using condensed milk which usually contains tons of sugar. Coconut butter is a dairy-free, plant-based ingredient that is made from blended coconut meat. It is a wholesome ingredient that is easy to find in most grocery storer or online.
- Chocolate chips make the outer layer of the patties. You could also use chocolate melts. Be sure to use dairy-free chocolate chips if you are on a lactose-free or vegan diet.
- Peppermint extract adds that fantastic peppermint flavor that is so iconic of York peppermint patties. I like this organic extract. Sometimes peppermint extract is also called peppermint oil or peppermint essential oil (make sure the bottle is labeled as food safe).
Please see the recipe card at the end of this post for the exact ingredients and measurements.
Recipe Steps
While there are a few steps to make this easy homemade peppermint patty recipe, it’s a very straightforward recipe. You really just have to melt the chocolate and coconut butter separately to make three layers to the patties.
Let me show you how easy it is to make these Homemade Peppermint Patties that taste very similar to a York peppermint patty.
Step One
Line a muffin tin with cupcake liners. If you don’t have a muffin tin, you can simply lay the muffin liners on a parchment-lined baking sheet or cookie sheet.
You may wish to line the baking tray with a piece of parchment paper or wax paper for easy clean up.
Step Two
Melt one cup of the chocolate chips in a large bowl and pour them into the bottom of your muffin tray. You can melt the chocolate in the microwave in 30 second intervals or use a double boiler.
Be sure to use a microwave-safe bowl if you are using that method.
Tap the tray to help the excess chocolate make the chocolate coating on the bottom of the liners.
Step Three
To make the coconut butter/peppermint layer (aka the creamy peppermint center), melt the coconut butter and stir in the peppermint extract.
Then, use a spoon to divide that mixture on top of the chocolate base layer.
Don’t worry if the coconut butter layer is messy. Your final layer of chocolate will cover it up.
Step Four
Melt the rest of your chocolate chips and layer them on top of the coconut butter and peppermint layer. Refrigerate your homemade peppermint patties until they are solid.
Then, remove the patties from your mold and serve cold or at room temperature.
I hope you agree that these copycat York Peppermint patties are your new favorite treats.
Recipe Tips
- VEGAN & PALEO: Be sure to use dairy-free chocolate chips.
- These homemade peppermint patties can be served at room temperature or chilled.
- Store any leftovers in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 7-10 days.
- Want to make these extra fancy? Sprinkle some smashed candy canes or peppermint candies on top of the chocolate coating before you refrigerate the patties.
Recipe FAQs
Coconut butter is a whole food. It is simply coconut flesh that is naturally sweet with no added sugar. I usually buy mine online, but you can also make coconut butter at home.
Not really. The chocolate and peppermint flavors are the most prominent.
Yes, but most milk chocolate is not vegan or dairy-free. But, you can adapt this recipe to your dietary needs. I like using dark chocolate chips to create a rich dark chocolate homemade peppermint patty recipe.
You could also use white chocolate, but, again, most white chocolate is made with milk.

- 1 1/2 cups chocolate chips, divided into 1 cup and 1/2 cup (be sure to use dairy-free chocolate chips if you are on a dairy-free or vegan diet)
- 1/2 cup coconut butter, also called coconut manna
- 2 teaspoons peppermint extract
Instructions
- Line a muffin tin with cupcake liners and set aside.
- Place one cup of the chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat the chocolate chips in 30 second increments, stirring the chips each time. After about 1 minute and 30 seconds, the chips should be fully melted and easy to stir together.

- Then, place the coconut butter in a small glass dish. Microwave for 30-45 seconds, or until the coconut butter is soft. Stir in the peppermint extract.
- Remove your mold from the freezer and use a clean spoon to divide the coconut butter on top of the solid chocolate layer.
- Then, place the mold back in the freezer for another 15 minutes to harden.

Love love peppermint flavored patties ! It goes so well with coffee or whenever I need a healthy snack ! Thanks for sharing.
Ahhhhhh! Just when I thought I had made every dessert on my “must make” list, I find this one! My favorite flavor combination to boot!
These sound so delicious! This is one of those recipes that makes me so sad I’m allergic to coconut. I wonder if it would work with additional cocoa butter instead–what do you think?
Becky, this recipe would definitely work with just cocoa butter and no coconut. In fact, I would probably prefer it that way since I’m not into coconut right now. Make some and send me one? 🙂 XOXO.
Chocolate and mint are so magical together! These look super yummy ????
I so agree, Stacey! Happy New Year!!!
Happy New Year to You & your Family 🙂
When I was growing up we would always have Andes chocolate mints on Christmas. It was a favorite thing for me to eat since I was in charge of putting them out for our guests and I’d always sneak in a few while doing that. But who knows what’s in those. These look wonderful and much healthier and even though it’s now past Christmas I might have to restart my tradition 🙂 Or maybe make a New Year’s Eve mint tradition?
Michele, I think I ate my weight in Andes mints at least several times over as a teenager! Those things are sooooo good! But, you’re right, I’m sure they’re filled with horrible things I don’t even want to think about. 🙂 I hope you enjoy this recipe with much “cleaner” ingredients. Happy holidays!!! XO.
I have to make these for my son! He loves peppermint, he calls is spicy! haha!
That’s sooooooo cute, Cristina! I’ve never heard peppermint described that way. 🙂
Oh wow! No way! My girls would love making these! What a fun treat!
Thanks, Renee! Happy holidays!
