I sent my request for a review copy to Dr. Romm’s publisher as soon as this book came out because I knew how significant it would be. It’s already a best-seller on Amazon, and it is excellent.

I first discovered Dr. Romm after searching “holistic health” on iTunes. I subscribed to her podcast, and then heard her interviewed on a few others. Her take on women’s health is so refreshing, and she comes across as so kind, knowledgeable, and caring. 

Dr. Romm has an amazing personal story. She was raised in the projects in NYC, and then became a Yale-trained physician. She is a member of the Yale Integrative Medicine Advisory Board. She has years of experience as a midwife and herbalist, and in treating women from a holistic point of view, as opposed to just writing prescriptions.

Because of my history of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and high stress levels, I have been particularly interested in Dr. Romm’s take on adrenal and thyroid health. The symptoms that Dr. Romm sees in so many women include:

  • weight gain
  • fatigue
  • brain fog
  • poor sleep
  • hormonal imbalances, and
  • autoimmune conditions

She calls this combination of symptoms “Survival Overdrive Syndrome,” and her book is spells out a 4-week plan to help reduce or eliminate these issues that are so, so damaging to our health. I have or have had all of those symptoms off and on for almost my whole life, so you sure aren’t alone if you have them, too.

It’s so sad that we suffer from stress-related disorders. I feel like we aren’t taught how to take care of ourselves in the modern world and that our bodies simply can’t keep up. Evolution doesn’t move fast enough to adapt to the toxins and smart phones and bright lights after dark, etc. Sure, I love modern conveniences, but sometimes it’s all just TOO MUCH.

Okay, I’m done ranting. I’m thrilled that the answers are available now if we want them, and that medical practitioners like Dr. Romm are helping so much. Her 4-week plan includes steps such as self-care practices, recommended supplements and food choices that nourish our adrenals and thyroid, and repairing our gut wall to help prevent autoimmune disease and food intolerances.

Dr. Romm’s take on diet is very interesting, especially because she was a vegetarian/vegan for 25 years, and so she has a lot of knowledge about the attributes and shortcomings of a plant-based approach. She also knows that each woman has specific needs that may change over time.

Conclusions

If you are a woman suffering from fatigue and unexplained weight gain, then I think you’ll get a lot out of this excellent book. Dr. Romm is a wonderful resource for women’s health issues.
