Heyyyy, it’s book club day! Today, my co-host and I are presenting The Hormone Secret: Discover Effortless Weight Loss and Renewed Energy in Just 30 Days by Tami Meraglia, MD:
I first heard Dr. Tami interviewed on Bulletproof Radio about adrenal health awhile back, and then I got to meet and hear her speak live at the Bulletproof Conference last year.
At the conference, she spoke more in-depth on the topic of hormones and the importance of taking care of our adrenal glands. She came across as that perfect blend of smart and kind. Not only that, but her advice seemed do-able, and not at all overly restrictive (more on that later).
Just as an example, some strategies I took from Dr. Tami’s talk included:
- Using breathing techniques to calm the nervous system
- Avoiding prescription medications for sleep as they disrupt the REM cycle and end up being counter-productive
- Eating breakfast with protein within 30 minutes of waking up
- Exercising regularly, but not too much
- Eating a snack before bedtime if waking up in the middle of the night is a problem
- Focusing on eating nutrient-dense foods
These aren’t too wacky, right? (Just so you know, these are my notes, and aren’t necessarily taken verbatim from what she said. For her actual advice, you should check our Dr. Tami’s website or, better yet, read her book)! And, as always, please note that I’m not a healthcare provider and you should consult your doctor before making any changes to your diet.
Some of what Dr. Tami talks and writes about in her book is also just plain common sense, but she seems very committed to helping people heal from our unhealthy modern lifestyle using food and behavior modifications. In other words, she’s not just another medical doctor who writes prescriptions that often have side effects or don’t actually fix the problem.
That said, not all health problems can be fixed with food and stress management. This is another reason why I love Dr. Tami, because she’s all about using pharmaceuticals or medical interventions responsibly when necessary and with close monitoring. The latest interview I heard with her is about using one’s own stem cells to help manage pain. Wow, this topic blew my mind! I’ll probably write more about this in the future, but I’ve just gotten started with my research.
The last thing I wanted to mention about The Hormone Secret is how much I love the diet portion. I thought that Dr. Tami might be another one of these doctors who presents a very restrictive program with the attitude that she knows the right answer for everyone. Not so. In fact, I love her balanced presentation of foods that might help with liver function, adrenal healing, and/or resetting hormones. I’m used to doctors and health gurus talking about what not to eat, so it was refreshing to hear from a doctor who is much more balanced in that way. Maybe because she’s also a woman and knows how to relate better to female patients? Just sayin’.
In fact, I’m pretty sure I’ll become a patient of Dr. Tami in the future, the reason being that my endocrinologist recently told me I should do standard hormone replacement therapy at some point in the future to help maintain my bone mass. I didn’t tell him that I heard Dr. Tami talk about bioidentical hormone therapy as an option that might actually work better for me. I’ve given up arguing with my “regular” doctors about some of this stuff. I respect my doctors, but I don’t think they have the time or freedom to explore some of the alternative therapies available.
I feel like I’ve inserted some strong opinions into this book review, but hormones are a sensitive subject (no pun intended)! I think it’s because the more I learn about certain health issues like hormones, the more I realize how much can be fixed at the very core with the right blend of lifestyle and medical intervention.
Now it’s your turn. This is meant to be a discussion, after all. Have you read this book? Do you have another book you’d like to suggest for our book club?
