  • This healthy green smoothie packs in nutrients without all the added sugars of a premade or store-bought smoothie. It’s a great way to start the day with tons of essential vitamins and nutrients.
  • It’s just as delicious dairy-free. Simply substitute your favorite plant based yogurt in place of the vanilla yogurt in the recipe.
  • Smoothies make an easy on-the-go breakfast. If I know I will need to dash out the door first thing in the morning I like to make this smoothie for breakfast. It’s done in 7 minutes – if that!

  • Unsweetened almond milk has a mild flavor and creamy consistency which makes it a perfect liquid base for a healthy smoothie. You can sub in your favorite plant milk or whole milk if you prefer. Either work great.
  • Vanilla yogurt makes an excellent addition to smoothies when you’re looking for a creamy texture. The yogurt also includes natural probiotics and a nice amount of protein. Use dairy-free yogurt to make this recipe vegan. To keep the added sugars low, you can use unsweetened vanilla yogurt or Greek yogurt. Or, for added sweetness, you a sweetened variety (kids usually prefer sweetened yogurt).
  • Green apples have a tart and refreshing flavor that pair perfectly with the sweetness of pineapple and banana. They are low in sugar and are easy to find at the store (look for the Granny Smith apple variety). Green apples are also on my list of the Best Green Fruits.

  • Frozen pineapple is one of my favorite additions to smoothies. It’s tropical flavor and natural sweetness make this smoothie very refreshing. Pineapple is also high in Vitamin C.
  • Chia seeds pack a nutritional punch with fiber, protein, healthy fat, manganese, and magnesium. You could also use hemp seeds or hemp hearts.
  • Baby spinach have delicate leaves and a mild flavor which makes them perfect for green smoothies. Raw spinach and other leafy greens may help prevent cancer and improve your eye health among many other benefits.
  • Ice cubes thicken up the smoothie just a bit more for the perfect thickness in your high-speed blender.

  • You can find frozen pineapple niblets or frozen chunks in the freezer section of your grocery store.
  • To make this recipe a meal replacement, consider adding 1-2 scoops of your favorite unsweetened protein powder or vanilla protein powder. See my list of the best healthy protein powders.
  • Use a good high speed blender to ensure that it gets really creamy.
  • Store any leftovers in a covered container or mason jar in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
  • If you don’t like or have almond milk on hand, you can also use dairy milk, cashew milk, coconut water, coconut milk, soy milk, or oat milk. Or, use orange juice as the base of the smoothie.
  • If you prefer this smoothie to be sweeter, you can add a small amount of raw honey or maple syrup to add a bit of sweetness.

Recipe FAQs

Do I have to use a frozen banana?

Yes, for this recipe it is best to use a frozen banana as it thickens up the smoothie. Simply peel the banana, cut it into chunks, and place it into a small freezer bag (see my full guide on how to freeze bananas). Freeze it overnight or up to three months.

Can I use red apples in this smoothie?

Yes but green apples are more acidic with a tarter flavor and red apples have a sweet flavor so the overall taste of the smoothie will be slightly different.
