2. Tamarillo

The tamarillo, also known as the tree tomato, is a small, oval-shaped fruit that grows on a small tree or shrub. It is part of the flowering plant family Solanaceae. Tamarillos are native to the northern Andes of South America.

Tamarillo fruit is usually red or orange in color, with thin skin and flesh that is sweet and tangy. Tamarillos are an excellent source of niacin, riboflavin, thiamine, vitamin C, vitamin A, and vitamin E.

In the United States, we most often see tamarind sold as a paste as opposed to the whole fruit. It’s often used as an ice cream flavor as well.

Tamarind is an excellent source of magnesium and calcium.

The tangelo is a citrus fruit that is a hybrid of the grapefruit and the tangerine. It is part of the Rutaceae family. This hybrid was discovered around 1920 on the island of Jamaica.

Tangelos are small to medium in size and have a spherical shape. They have thick, leathery skin that is bright orange. The flesh of the tangelo fruit is juicy and tangy, with a sweet-tart flavor. Tangelos are an excellent source of Vitamin C and fiber.

7. Tarap

Tarap is a peculiar fruit that resembles a hybrid of durian and Jackfruit. The tarap is native to Palawan, Mindanao Island and Borneo.

This fruit is also known as terap, kiran, green pedalai, johey, marang, madang, and timadang. The fruit’s shape resembles a cross between the Jackfruit and the Breadfruit.

When the fruit reaches maturity, its color changes from a pale shade of green to a dark brown. The skin is coated in delicate spines and resembles the Durian or the Jackfruit in appearance. I have never seen a tarap and it is new to my fruit vocabulary.

8. Tart Cherry

The tart cherry is a small fruit that is part of the Prunus cerasus species. Tart cherries are native to Carpathian Basin and are the most prominent species of cherry currently grown in the United States.

Tart cherries are small and round, with a bright red color. They have a sour-tart flavor. Tart cherries are an excellent source of vitamins A, C, B6, and E, folic acid fiber, potassium, beta carotene, antioxidants, potassium, calcium, iron, and magnesium.
