Healthy Honey Mustard Salad Dressing
If you’re looking for a bright and flavorful homemade vinaigrette dressing, then you’re going to love this recipe for healthy Honey Mustard Salad Dressing. It is sweet and tangy. Drizzle it over salad greens or roasted vegetables.
If you’ve never made your own salad dressing, then you’re in for a treat. Homemade dressing is easy, budget-friendly, and way better than store-bought!
This honey mustard dressing recipe calls for just a few simple ingredients. Olive oil, lemon juice, honey, Dijon mustard and seasonings are shaken until emulsified for a creamy vinaigrette.
Creamy honey mustard dressing has a sweet and zippy taste that tastes great with greens. It’s versatile and tastes delicious with a fruit-topped salad as much as a veggie-packed one.
Healthy Salad Dressing Benefits
- Many honey mustard dressings call for mayonnaise, this healthy version is mayonnaise-free making it lighter and with less sodium!
- Use it as a delicious dipping sauce for carrot sticks, sliced bell peppers, broccoli, or sliced cucumber.
- Only takes 6 minutes to whip up! Store it in the refrigerator and use it all week long.
- It uses real ingredients without any unhealthy additives or artificial flavorings. One of the best parts about homemade salad dressings is that you can control the quality of ingredients (see my list of the safest cooking oils).
Key Ingredients
- Olive oil – Olive oil makes the dressing rich and creamy. It also adds plenty of flavor. Don’t have olive oil? See my list of the best substitutes for olive oil.
- Dijon mustard – Dijon mustard is essential for that signature mustard flavor. This recipe is best with creamy Dijon mustard, but will work with yellow mustard or stone ground mustard (see my list of the Best Substitutes for Dijon Mustard).
- Apple cider vinegar – Vinegar adds a zip that tastes so good with the honey!
- Honey – Without the honey, honey mustard dressing would be too tangy. Honey sweetens it up and adds a subtle honey flavor. If you want to make this recipe vegan, substitute maple syrup for the honey.
- Salt & pepper – Don’t forget to season! Salt and pepper accentuate all the flavors.
Be sure to check the recipe card at the end of this post for the exact measurements.
Recipe Steps
Step One
Pour the olive oil into a jar. Make sure it has a lid!
Please see the recipe card at the end of this post for the exact ingredients and measurements.
Step Two
Add the vinegar to the jar.
Step Three
Add the honey, mustard, salt, and pepper.
Step Four
Screw on the lid and shake the jar for a good 20 seconds. This will allow the oil and vinegar to emulsify, meaning that the oil and vinegar become blended.
Now, your dressing is ready to serve. You can drizzle it over salad greens, roasted vegetables, cooked potatoes, or whatever needs a slightly sweet, tangy dressing.
I love this dressing on my Southwestern Chicken Salad as an example.
Honey Mustard Dressing Recipe Tips
- Adjust the ingredients to your taste! Follow the recipe and then taste the dressing. If you like it sweeter, add more honey. If you like it with more mustard flavor, add some extra mustard. Just do it gradually, you can always add more, but you can’t take it out!
- This dressing tastes amazing on more than salad. You can drizzle it on roasted vegetables, mixed greens, rice bowls, or as a quick dressing for potato salad.
- Honey mustard dressing is perfect if you love to meal prep. Make it at the beginning of the week and pop it on mixed greens for a quick salad.
- For a thicker salad dressing, blend the dressing together in a food processor. This will keep the mustard dressing thick and emulsified.
