Pears are so great to munch on as healthy snack. But, for a delicious baked dessert that uses ripe pears and apples as the base, I think you are going to love this Gluten-Free Apple Pear Crisp. 

You can use whatever type of pear you like for this recipe, but you’ll need to wait for them to be ripe before you use them. It can take up to a week for pears to ripen, but you can speed up that process by placing them in a paper bag for a few days. 

I recommend using apples along with the pears in this recipe, just because the combination of both of the textures, along with the crumbly topping is just divine.

Recipe Tips

I used cassava flour to make the gluten-free crisp topping for this recipe. Cassava is a whole food that comes from a root and is dehydrated and ground into flour. If you don’t have any cassava flour on hand, you can always use your favorite gluten-free flour. 

The cobbler topping is delicate and deliciously sweet with some maple syrup. I used coconut oil in the topping to keep it vegan, but you could also use a grass-fed ghee instead of coconut oil for a more buttery, paleo version.

Recipe Steps

Step One

You’ll need to preheat your oven and get a glass dish ready.

Step Two

Chop the apples and pears into bite-sized pieces and place in a medium mixing bowl. Stir the lemon juice and raisins with the chopped apple and pear and pour into the baking dish.

Step Three

Cover the baking dish with foil and place in the oven for 30 minutes.

Step Four

While the fruit is baking, make the crumble topping. Combine the cassava flour, baking powder, cinnamon, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and coconut oil in a medium mixing bowl.

Use your fingers to mix the ingredients together to form the crisp crumble topping.

Step Five

Carefully remove the baking dish from the oven and dollop the crumb topping on top.

Step Six

Place the baking dish back in the oven, uncovered, for another 30 minutes. Then, when it’s done, carefully remove the dish and let it cool for about 10 minutes before serving.

Yes, you can, but then the recipe will not be gluten-free.

For the fruit base:

  • Nonstick cooking spray
  • 5 medium sweet red apples, such as Fuji, Honeycrisp, or Gala
  • 2 large pears
  • 1 tablespoon freshly-squeezed lemon juice (from about ½ of a medium lemon)
  • 2 tablespoons raisins

For the crumble:

  • ¾ cup cassava flour, or your favorite gluten-free flour
  • ¼ teaspoon baking powder

  • 1/4 cup coconut oil, melted
