How to Use Dairy-Free Milks
You can use any or all of these homemade recipes in place of dairy milk for all of your cooking needs. Dairy-free milks can be used for a variety of purposes, including:
- Vegan coffee creamer
- Paleo milk to serve with grain-free Grain-Free Pumpkin Granola
- Base of a creamy, dairy-free soup like my Vegan Potato Leek Soup
- As the base of a smoothie like my Strawberry Green Smoothie
- To make my Keto Peanut Butter Chia Pudding
- or any other purpose to help make dairy-free living easier and more enjoyable!
I do recommend having a high-speed blender to make homemade nut milks, such as a Blendtec or Vitamix. This will make your life so much easier.

Thanks for sharing these milk recipes, Carrie! I’m both gluten and dairy-free – have been for quite some time. Can you tell me your thoughts on “sprouting” nuts and seeds first? I understand the sprouting removes/reduces the lectins. Do hemp seeds need to be sprouted before making this milk? I’ve been learning how to sprout almonds to make almond milk and that turns out pretty delicious, but have not thought about making my own coconut, hemp or oat beverages before. I understand that oats, in general, can be a little controversial for those of us with autoimmune diseases and food sensitivities? Oh, one last thing. For those of us that don’t own a Blendtec or Vitamix, would other high-speed blenders work okay for these? The one I use is from KitchenAid and works great for almond milk but not sure about these. 🙂
Hi Pam, I am a big fan of sprouting, but not all nuts and seeds can be sprouted. My understanding is that hemp seeds won’t sprout. It also is just a lot of effort. I don’t often do it anymore. I do buy sprouted pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds, bu not for making milk. I usually just buy organic nuts and seeds for making milks. And, yes, you can use a regular blender for most non-dairy milks, but the result won’t be as creamy as if you used a Vitamix. Does the help? Thanks for the note!
