Homemade Vanilla Hemp Milk Recipe
Here’s a super easy and delicious Homemade Hemp Milk recipe that is dairy-free, vegan, and paleo. Use this recipe for smoothies, chia puddings, or on your cereal.
This homemade Vanilla Hemp Milk is my favorite non-dairy milk of the moment. This recipe is pretty awesome because it requires no straining through a nut milk bag, which ensures that you get the full nutrition from the hemp seed, including fiber and omega-3 fatty acids. It also means that it is super easy and fast to make, taking all of 10 minutes from start to finish.
Of course, you’ll need to start with hemp seeds, also called hemp hearts. I like to buy organic hemp seeds online or at any natural foods stores. I’ve even found them at Costco.
If you’ve never had hemp seeds, they are fairly neutral in flavor, tender, with just a little bit of crunch. I think they are just delightful when eaten in their raw form.
Recipe Steps
Step One
Gather your ingredients, including hemp seeds, water, dates, and a vanilla bean. If you don’t have a vanilla bean, you can always use vanilla extract or just leave it out.
Step Two
Then, you literally just combine the ingredients, blend them for 30 seconds in a high-speed blender, and then pour into a glass container for storage.
Step Three
The hemp milk will last up to 5 days in the refrigerator. If it separates before you use it, just give it a quick shake.
How to Serve
I prefer to use hemp milk for raw (non-cooked) recipes to preserve the healthy fats, a chia pudding with blueberries is one example. To make the pudding, just combine 1/2 cup of the hemp milk with 3 tablespoons of chia seeds and top with fresh blueberries.
Other ways to use hemp milk include: as a coffee creamer, as the base of a green smoothie, or on top of granola. See my recipe for Homemade Grain-Free Pumpkin Spice Granola.
FAQs
I generally only keep it for about 5 days.
It has a slight grassy flavor which is why I like to mix it with vanilla and dates. This recipe tastes neutral and slightly sweet.
I don’t, since I want to preserve the healthy fats. Almond milk is probably a better choice for dairy-free cooked or baked recipes.
This recipe can really only be made in a Vitamix or Blendtec, since you need the high-speed motor to truly blend the hemp seeds and make for a creamy result.

I’ve used hemp seeds before in baking, but never for hemp milk. Do you have to include the dates? Is it too bitter or bland without them?
Hi Julia, you can leave the dates out. The hemp milk might have a “grassy” taste, but it’s not that bad. 🙂
I tried hemp milk at a coffee shop when I visited a friend in Oregon. It was so good!
