Chocolate Banana Smoothie
You only need four ingredients to make this creamy Chocolate Banana Smoothie. This recipe is vegan, paleo, and dairy-free, and only takes a few minutes to make. If you are a chocolate lover, then you must try this ASAP!
When you need a quick chocolate fix, or you just want a cold and refreshing smoothie that is healthy and delicious, then you’ve got to try this Chocolate Banana Smoothie. With only four ingredients, you can make this in just a few minutes.
You can use either cocoa powder or cacao powder to add the rich chocolate flavor. Dark chocolate is actually very healthy since it is very high in antioxidants and magnesium.
In fact, it is thought that the high magnesium content in chocolate could be one reason why some women crave it around their menstrual cycles. Just for that reason, I have nicknamed this Chocolate Banana Smoothie, “The PMS Smoothie.” Trust me, it helps!
Recipe Steps
Step One
Place your milk, banana, cocoa powder, and maple syrup in the pitcher of a high speed blender.
I highly recommend using a high speed blender like a Blendtec or a Vitamix.
If you don’t want to use boxed coconut beverage in this recipe, you can make your own homemade coconut milk. Or, you can just use regular unsweetened almond milk or your choice of dairy-free milk. See my list of the best homemade dairy-free milk recipes.
And, as always, please check the recipe card at the end of this post for the exact ingredients and measurements.
Step Two
Blend your ingredients on high for about 30 seconds, or until the smoothie is completely blended and creamy.
Step Three
Once you’ve blended your chocolate smoothie, then you can serve it right out of the blender.
Pro Tips
- You can easily double or triple this recipe depending on how many servings you want.
- Use two pitted dates instead of maple syrup, if you prefer.
- If you don’t have coconut beverage, you can also use light canned coconut milk OR your choice of unsweetened dairy-free milk.
- You can use either cocoa powder or cacao powder.
- Use a Blendtec or a Vitamix to ensure that the smoothie gets very creamy and fully blended.

Yes, you can! It may not be as smooth, but it will still be delicious.

I eat based on hunger, which I did when I was vegan too, but had trouble staying full then.
I love the ingredients you used in this smoothie (except soy milk, because of an allergy, sadly). But I want to make this using rice or coconut milk. I have a hard time remembering to freeze bananas, mostly because they get eaten up so quickly.
I have a hard time keeping bananas around, too! I’ve tried all types of techniques to get them to ripen faster. 🙂
I went from a STRICT low-carber to vegan. I still try to be very conscious of bad carbs and have not gained any weight!
Yay, keep up the good work Debi! 🙂
I was skeptical of the choc-blueberry combo until I tried it…and I loved it! Actually, even better is WHITE choc + blueberry 😉
How do you make it white chocolate?
I’ve blended a touch of melted cacao butter + a couple Tbsp of soaked cashews into a blueberry smoothie (not oil-free, of course, but delicious!), and I’ve also tried a white chocolate extract (amazing!) in a blueberry shake.
The milkshake looks great!
I am not usually a calorie counter, but when I’m eating some not-so-healthy food, I’ll mentally add up the calories just to keep tabs on how far out of control I’m going 🙂
In general, the healthier I eat, the less I think about calories, and the more I think about satisfaction…it’s way nicer to think this way 🙂
That’s my feeling, too: as long as I’m eating healthy foods, I just go on hunger and satisfaction.
I was always leery of chocolate mixed with blueberry until I made a similar shake…. what a perfect combo of flavors!
I’m not leery of anything involving chocolate. 🙂
I’m with ya, Carrie!
Ooh, this looks delicious. I am going to steal this recipe.

I am not a calorie counter. I stick pretty much to 99% plant-based, whole foods and I think I can eat like a little piggie and not gain weight. But add in too many grains & the scale shoots up.
Having said that, I do use an online tracking system as a food log, which also tracks calories. I’m always off the charts for sugar & calories, but I haven’t gained. Haven’t lost either.
One of my favorite recipes this summer.
