One of the most popular recipes on this site, Clean Eating Kitchen, is my recipe for making Healthy Gummy Bears. But, that recipe is not vegan because it uses gelatin powder, an animal by-product and common ingredient in regular gummy bears.

For my plant-based and vegan friends, I’m re-creating the recipe using agar agar powder instead of gelatin. Agar agar is made from seaweed so it’s appropriate for vegan and plant-based diets.

It’s a vegan ingredient that helps re-create the chewy texture of gummy worms and jelly beans.

Benefits of Vegan Gummies

  • Skip the artificial flavorings, citric acid, and high-fructose corn syrup included in many fruit treats and make your own instead!
  • These vegan gummies are great for anyone who has a sweet tooth but can’t tolerate gelatin.
  • The ingredient list for these yummy treats includes just two items. Skip the processed gummy brands.

Recipe Steps

As mentioned, it’s very easy to make your own plant-based gummies or fruit snacks. This recipe for Homemade Vegan Gummies only has two simple ingredients.

Best of all, there are no artificial colors, artificial flavors, or animal products in these high quality gummy candies.

Step One

To make the gummies, you’ll heat the juice in a saucepan to a simmer.

You can use whatever type of fruit juice you like. To avoid too much sugar, use 100% fruit juice like pomegranate juice which has a lovely flavor plus vitamin C.

Step Two

Next, whisk in the agar agar powder, stirring occasionally until the ingredients are combined and the mixture starts to boil.

Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes.

Please see the recipe card at the end of this post for the exact ingredients and measurements.

Step Three

Turn off the heat and give the mixture one final whisk.

Step Four

The last step is to pour the mixture into your mold.

You can do this without spilling by transferring the mixture into a small pitcher.

Step Five

Divide the juice mixture evenly into your molds. Place the molds on a baking sheet and set it in the freezer or the refrigerator to set.

I used these heart shaped silicone molds. This recipe for how to make vegan gummies makes 30 pieces total, or 15 2-piece servings.

Step Six

Wait at least 30 minutes before removing the gummies from the molds.

I hope you agree the these fruity treats are the best gummies you’ve ever had, along with some great health benefits from the natural fruit juice.

  • If you don’t have a mold, just pour your mixture into a square baking dish and cut your vegan jello into squares once it has set.
  • Be sure to use real fruit juice for the most nutrition in your vegan gummies.
  • If you want to add some sweetness, add 1-2 tablespoons of organic cane sugar.
