The best combination of sweet and tart – this smoothie is the morning energy boost you’ve been searching for! Apple, banana, pineapple, chia seeds, and baby spinach are blended together for a refreshing smoothie packed full of feel-good nutrients.

Why You Need This Recipe

  • This healthy green smoothie packs in nutrients without all the added sugars of a premade or store-bought smoothie. The only additional sugar is from the vanilla yogurt while premade smoothies are oftentimes made with sugar-laden smoothie bases and juices.
  • It’s just as delicious dairy-free. Simply substitute your favorite plant based yogurt in place of the vanilla yogurt in the recipe.
  • Smoothies make an easy on-the-go breakfast. If I know I will need to dash out the door first thing in the morning I like to make this smoothie for breakfast. It’s done in 7 minutes – if that!

Key Ingredients

ingredients for a green apple smoothie

Unsweetened almond milk has a mild flavor and creamy consistency which makes it a perfect liquid base for a healthy smoothie. You can sub in your favorite plant milk or whole milk if you prefer. Either work great.

Vanilla yogurt makes an excellent addition to smoothies when you’re looking for a creamy texture. The yogurt also includes natural probiotics and a nice amount of protein. Use dairy-free yogurt to make this recipe vegan.

Green apples have a tart and refreshing flavor that pair perfectly with the sweetness of pineapple and banana. They are low in sugar and are easy to find at the store. Green apples are also on my list of the Best Green Fruits.

Frozen banana works twofold – it sweetens the smoothie and thickens it up nicely. See my guide on how to freeze bananas for smoothies.

Frozen pineapple is one of my favorite additions to smoothies. It’s tropical flavor and natural sweetness make this smoothie very refreshing. Pineapple is also high in Vitamin C.

Chia seeds pack a nutritional punch with fiber, protein, heart-healthy fat, manganese, and magnesium.

Baby spinach have delicate leaves and a mild flavor which makes them perfect for green smoothies. Spinach and other leafy greens may help prevent cancer and improve your eye health among many other benefits.

Ice cubes thicken up the smoothie just a bit more for the perfect thickness.

Recipe FAQs

Do I have to use a frozen banana?

Yes, for this recipe it is best to use a frozen banana as it thickens up the smoothie. Simply peel the banana, cut it into chunks, and place it into a small freezer bag (see my full guide on how to freeze bananas). Freeze it overnight or up to three months.

Can I use red apples in this smoothie?

Yes but green apples are more acidic with a tarter flavor and red apples have a sweet flavor so the overall taste of the smoothie will be slightly different.
