Avocadoes are perfect for smoothies. They have a high fat content which means they have a creamy flesh that’s ideal for making them thick and smooth without any dairy.

They’re also incredibly nutritious with a neutral flavor that pairs well with most smoothies especially chocolate. The chocolate and banana flavor shines through while the avocado just adds a wonderful texture and added nutrients.

Trust me, this healthy chocolate smoothie masks any of the avocado flavor. The best part? It tastes like a milkshake!

Key Ingredients

Ingredients for a chocolate avocado smoothie.
  • Unsweetened almond milk has a neutral flavor that helps make the smoothie smooth without any dairy or added sugar. You can use any type of dairy-free milk you like.
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder adds a rich chocolate flavor to the smoothie and lots of good antioxidants. You can also use raw cacao powder.
  • Ripe avocado thickens up the smoothie and makes it creamy like a chocolate milkshake. Believe it or not, but avocado works great in sweet recipes like this one. See my related recipes for Avocado Ice Cream or Avocado Pudding!
  • Banana naturally sweetens this delicious smoothie and makes it thick and cold like ice cream. Be sure the banana is ripe or it won’t be sweet and creamy. If you’re on a keto diet, feel free to leave out the banana.
  • Maple syrup sweetens it up nicely. Use a healthy sugar substitute if you don’t want any added sugars.

Recipe FAQs

Are avocadoes good for you?

Avocadoes are nutrient powerhouses. They contain a generous amount of healthy fats, potassium, and fiber because of this they’re also very filling. You might also like my recipe for Chocolate Avocado Pudding and my tips on how to freeze ripe avocados.

Can I use a banana that hasn’t been frozen?

The frozen banana is what thickens up the smoothie and makes it creamy so it’s essential for this recipe. Freezing a banana is super simple. Peel the banana then break it in half and put it in a zip top bag to freeze overnight. You can do this with several bananas so you always have one ready. See my full post on how to freeze bananas.
